Can you back them up onto a cd and remove the region encoding? I got one of those no chip things for the ps2 but someone lost all the parts on me when they kicked my ps2.

Ripping and re-burning isn't a good idea. To rip foreign disks (for DVDs anyway) you need to change the region code of your DVD Drive. You can only change the region code a fixed number of times and then you're suck with the last region you set it to (for the precise reason to stop people from doing the type of think you are trying to do)

I might buy the special DVD ripper for the wii but i would only backup Pal games. I don't think it is the same for games as movie DVDs

They don't do that anymore and when you rip you can remove the region code from the dvd.

And was so enlighted after that?

Anyway, why do people invent stupid things liek region codes? Who uses a region code anyway? does it really MATTER? I agree that in some lands the standard for voltage is different so they use a different kind of machine depending on the region, but why the discs and cartridges and etc?? e.g. The snes american games look different than the snes european games:

That was a rudimentry copy protection system. Also the games are made for different frame rates and screen resolutions. With DVDs it doesn't matter but on a european console the frame rate of the game will be all out of sync with audio unless it's coded nicely.

I think many of the less logical things are to due with countrys (USA in particular) not conforming to international standards, or making their own standard (NTSC/PAL/SECAM framerates being a good example of this).

Like, the international space station has duplicate sets of tools for eveything, as the US insist on building everything to imperial measurements, dispite the rest of the space station being metric-based. There was also a US/UK colaboration making a submarine, each country made half of the craft, but when they came to fit the halves together, they didn't fit, as noone bothered to specify if the measurements were in metric or imperial.

Moved topic - this forum is intended for game modding and total conversions - i.e. making games by modifying existing ones. For example Counterstrike began as a mod for Half-Life.

Games are region coded because it stops international piracy or something.

I'm sure they'd tell you it funds international terrorism.

hm, morally it shouldn't stop us getting the same games in my opinion.

sometimes it's a border line that makes little sense:

mario striker actually isn't out for Wii over in the states (NTSC), so i guess us (PAL) europeans are pretty damn lucky to have the first online play release so early.

but is there a valid reason for releasing games in this fashion?? i can't see any, especially when Wii was about "unifying" the world in gaming. unless it's big-time marketing schemes, or

IT'S A CONSPIRACY.

I thaught it fit best there than anywhere else AND i did know that.

So no one can answer a simple question without talking about the history of region coded games back in the gulf war.

Well if you spend time converting a game into a pal format and then your market buys the ntsc version then you've thrown away loads of money on localisation and shit or something. you fag.
