I was thinking about an excursion from Dark Basic Pro to Dark GDK.

It has all the functions and commands of DBPro (ever growing and more useful) but in a cpp based environment.

Has anyone tried or coded anything in Dark GDK? It seems it is also endorsed by microsoft. Which isn't a bad thing.

See http://gdk.thegamecreators.com/ for the low down.

I am thinking of an asteriods clone as a test demo - then getting back into my 3d supershoot --> http://www.booleansoup.com/ind … rklog&id=69

Oh I forgot to add, Dark GDK is absolutely FREE.

what do you know?

dark basic is pretty crap. dbpro is actually quite well developed and usable.

Dark GDK is the next step.

Probably a selling point? Dark as in like coder's bedrooms?

Here, i've started a 3d asteriods clone. There is a lot of scope for Visual C++ and GDK in terms of game-programming as it takes the simple parts of C++ and links it to all the functions and power of DBPro. I'm lucky that i can 3d model:

That's untextured 3d graphics. But rotating randomly and skating across the screen like i wanted them.

Yup, definately is. Particuarly as it's free - you download the GDK and the free Visual C++ 2008 Express Edition.

Would be brilliant if VC++ 2008 didn't crash when trying to make a new project or file

It has never crashed for me. Ever.

Yes it helps, unless you have Visual C++ i imagine.

Here, i've gotten so far with the game, thought you guys would like to see.

The backdrop was created in PhotoShop. All the models were created in Wings3d and Calgari Truespace.

Still, the ship is yet to "thrust" anywhere, it just rotates on the spot with use of the arrow keys.

The asteroids just rotate randomly on 3 axis and slide across the screen, which is a 3d wrap, and took some time and thought.

They are very old you know, warped by space dust only..

yes, i shall be quite soon, hope it dosen't take too much off the frame rate. thing like that are a bugger you know!

well, it's playable now.. i took away the backdrop as it seemed like it detracted my attention from what was important - gameplay. though no big explosions yet.

it looks a lot better in motion, i even added sounds.

Nice work Square.

DGDK is severely underused, it has a lot of power that most DBP users are scared of because of the mystery C++ adds to the equation. I should use it more often.

I think I read somewhere that it's because it's a "dark horse". But that's crappy.

Kudos on the falling rocks 3d :D
