I know some of you are at Uni studying Computing/Computer Science. I'am currently trying to decide on a degree, and I wanted to know your opinion on what's involved, and what type of person would benefit from such a degree course.

It does depend on what you want to do. I have next to no proper qualifications other than my GCSEs, and I have a nice programming job. Portfolio and showing you have the ability means a lot more than an official qualification in good jobs. "Big Co" on the other hand generally only understand what you've done in formal education, they have no time to look deeper than that. [Edited on February 16, 2008 by Fiona] ____________ laffo |

I'd be doing the degree primarily because I want to spend 3 years learning at a high level. I'm not neccesarily thinking about employment in the computing industry as with a degree (esp a numerate degree such as CompSci) you can get a job in almost any sector you feel like. I'm not bothered about thinking about employment yet.

I don't know anything bout UK but here it is mainly business based, but then again it depends the industry you get into. Currently I work at Aleris so that's METALLLLLL baby ... err never mind.. Your real mission begins when you finished school, so I wouldn't worry too much about what you can do with your knowledge afterwards. They still give training sessions at work too so... warning: if programming is your profession chances are high you won't like programming as a hobby anymore, unless you are a real freak... Well, having a programming job surely makes you want to program less in your own time. But the fun programming things I do in my own time are those I can't do at work. But most of my free time isn't spend on programming because I really don't feel like it. But luckily, there are more hobbies :-). ____________ blog.htbaa.com |

I'm attending a local college for Information Technology (which entails programming and such). In my sophomore year, however, I'm going to transfer into their Game Design and Development program :] I'm so pumped. ____________ |
