The competition has been running for a couple of days now, and it seems to have made a kick-ass start. The worklog posts have been flowing in and there are quite a bunch of competitors, so this promises to be a hot competition! For those of you who haven't entered yet: please note that you are free to enter the competition any time during the period it runs, so if you feel like it jump in!

There also have been some questions, most about content creation. To clarify a bit on that: As it says on the rules page, the entrants must make all content themselves from scratch during the competition. This includes all code (external libraries excluded as long as they don't contain whole parts of your game), all graphics, all music, all sound. Free media are not allowed, nor is a friend allowed to do your content if he isn't in your team, nor are you allowed to buy content for in your game. The rules aren't discussable: they won't be changed. All we can do is clarify on them and answer your questions on the forum.

Making means either 'creating' or 'generating', so you're allowed to use explosion/character/landscape/texture generators. This includes programs like Poser, the DIV2 man generator and Terragen. You aren't allowed to use pre-made material like textures in the process though. As for music, you are allowed to use mix programs like Ejay/Magix Music maker/Acid music with very basic samples as building blocks like those that came on the cd, or instrument samples from the standard midibank of your soundcard.

To sum some of the the answers to the other questions up: multiple entries are allowed, all violence is accepted, don't count on it that the judges are anime freaks, the judges will do their best to run your game on a pc that can have the workload, and it seems the definition of dinosaurs does not include pterosaurs (flying), ichthyosaurs(swimming), plesiosaurs(swimming) and mosasaurs(swimming). Of course you can use them in your game if you use the theme dinosaurs, although you then should also make sure you include some 'real' dinosaurs so the theme is obvious. You are allowed to upload updates of your game if you discover bugs and the like as long as it is done before the deadline. You are also allowed to upload a demo to the WIP's page.

Phew. Now get that ass moving! :P

Quoting wikipedia:
Using the strict cladistical definition that all descendants of a single common ancestor are related, modern birds are dinosaurs and dinosaurs are, therefore, not extinct. Modern birds are classified by most paleontologists as belonging to the subgroup Maniraptora, which are coelurosaurs, which are theropods, which are saurischians, which are dinosaurs.

Or just make a game.

What's all this about the dinosaurs? If it lived a long time ago and its got a stupid latin name its a dinosaur! Surely you're not going to be judging on biological accuracy??

If we have to use the old fashion dinos, does that mean the T-Rex's head must be as large as its body? ;)

No, but Iguanadon must stand on its rear legs with its thumb in the air, hitching a ride like. That's how it was perceived/portrayed when I was knee-high to a hovis sandwich. A T-Rex was a predator back then too, not a scavenger :/

I think most, if not all, the judges will at least be familiar with the typical visual style of anime. Although if you pelt them with references to Naruto, and Gundam Wing, they wont neccesarily get them. But that is a good thing. It's much more satisfying when you do. Which is why I like Spaced so much. If it isn't referencing something, it's just about to.
