As some of you know, I'm building a Tesla coil. I am sure none of you wants to miss out on the fun, so I'll describe my live and dying by fatal shock in this thread. What I have done to date: Got a neontransformer. Got a 0-260 volt VARIAC. Got 8 meters of neonwire (extra isolated, ready for highvoltage). Built a capacitor bank out of three 6kV 47 nF DC capacitors, making a total of about 1200 KV 15.7 nF AC. Built an adjustable static sparkgap out of two big fat screws. Wound the secundairy coil on a 8 cm diameter PVC tube, over about 48 cms (about 1200 windings). Recent photos: Capacitorbank Self-built winding machine Wound coil (It's finished, still need to cut off a piece of that big PCV tube though) Testing the sparkgap with my neontransformer (8000 volt @ 28mA) Something is not working here. The spark should jump from the first conductor to the second, but somehow a spark is created on one side. a small movie of this uh, mistake Well, after the above experiment, something even worse went wrong. The electricity sparked right through the extra isolated wires (!) and whole the wires lighted up blue and were surrounded with electricity. That shouldn't happen, that wire is MADE to endure high voltage. My neontransformer broke down because of that weird event. It can still light small neontubes, but it can't be used to make sparks anymore, it must be half broken. Meh. WOOOOOOOOOOH Looking sweet already! Too bad the pictures are a little vague. I hope I don't get killed before you finish this project. ____________ BennuWiki Yes, my avatar has grey borders in IE (so get a decent browser) ROOFLEZ ROOFLEZ |

Quoting Rincewind: the wires lighted up blue and were ovulated with electricity. That shouldn't happen, that wire is MADE to endure high voltage. Ovulated! OMG! ____________ boredome is the bitter fruit of too much routine |

Wood: blame it on worldlingo.com. I looked up some words because I had no idea what they should be in English. This was a wrong word eh? And yeah, the pictures are a bit vague - that's because they were taken in the dark, and because I was focusing on the spark with my camera. And my camera is pretty bad in focusing, it's just a fujifilm thing. ____________ Personal website: http://www.loijson.com |

Quoting Rincewind: Wood: blame it on worldlingo.com. I looked up some words because I had no idea what they should be in English. This was a wrong word eh? Depends on your point of view. I see that usage as a triumph of the English language. ____________ boredome is the bitter fruit of too much routine |

Nice emoticon. Did you make that yourself Frim (since it's in Booleansoups smiley style)? If so then I think it should be added to the BS smileys. [Edited on October 2, 2005 by Rincewind] ____________ Personal website: http://www.loijson.com |

Squarepusher: And welcome to Booleansoup! And about my project: I found out there was a neonfactory near my livingplace, so today I went there and asked if they'd sell an old neontransformer to me, which they did! For just 25 euros I got a new neontransformer, some extra isolated high voltage cables (so my neontransformer has less chance to die again) and even a small neontube! The guy that sold it to me was really friendly and interested, so I suppose that's why I got all this for so few. ____________ Personal website: http://www.loijson.com |

You know, I had actually assumed that the RTS was called Tesla Coil and Frim was just making 'light fun'. But goddamn it, this is a million times cooler.
