For some reason, when I came back from university, my computer still requires me to have all my proxy settings on so that I can connect to the internet, even though my internet at home doesn't have any proxy set up.

I thought it might just be firefox and IE, so I downloaded and installed Opera and that's the same, except that it opens google and fuck all else.

In addition, any web-site that has anything to do with torrents won't open. I could understand the proxy settings interfering with the use of torrents, but these sites won't even open.

I am perplexed.

Post-script: Prior to Easter, my machine was infected with the old Sasser Worm, and would randomly shut down. Believe it or not, I tried to get rid of it using several pieces of software that worked for me when my old computer had it, but it wasn't having any of it. The second I got it home however, it started to work fine and has done ever since. Could this be related?

Note, the proxy stuff was an issue then, but I did download the Aristocrats film via torrents over that holiday period.

I've asked around but no-one seems to know. Could you guys, being techys, give me a hand?

We have a 4 port router for the internet but that's as far as any sort of network goes as far as I know.

So you can connect to the internet through the proxy even though there is no proxy?

Could you post a screenshot of your settings for Firefox or MSIE.

Does that mean you are connecting all the way to your university network?

So you tried setting it to direct connection to the internet.

do you need different network connections for different networks. Like one for home, work, and college???

you could check there's nothing wierd under
internet options->connections. and ->settings

some laptop I saw had installed custom scripts and stuff from their uni, I just removed them all, then it worked.

and you want direct connection as retep says.

I'm not connecting to my uni network as far as I know, my computer is merely confused in some way that I don't understand. I've tried setting direct connection, and IE works that way for about 30 seconds before saying no. Firefox just gives the standard 'can't reach site blah blah' straight away.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'different network connections' exactly, but I don't usually have to set anything up at home, just plug the network cable in. It seems to work fine with my laptop (but then, that always had problems with the uni network :()

DTM: I tried going through the control panel, and following your options and I didn't find any scripts. However, in one properties box, which followed the 'internet options->connections. and ->settings' had the proxy settings there (obviously). Sending them straight Direct Internet, and doing the same in IE makes it work (although still prevents me from opening sites with torrent anywhere in the url). Firefox still requires me to have the proxy settings inputted, but the login dialogue box no longer pops up the second you open it (your required to type in your computer login everytime you use the internet at uni, a quirk which for some reason I still had to do for a long time even at home).

It's a step in the right direction, but not ideal. I'm going to test my brother's computer later for the torrent thing, to see whether it's my machine or the internet trying to censor me or something.

I also did a diagnostic run on my machine, and apparently my router failed(?)

Sounds like a firewall problem, but don't ask me where the firewall is. it could be in your router, your computer, or a rule on the proxy you are referring to.

if the proxy is on your university it may filter out torrent sites etc.

the 30 seconds thing sounds disturbing and error-ish. In any case you should NOT use the proxy settings turned on. turn proxy off. Try also pinging your other computers.

check your LAN TCP/IP properties. If you do not use DHCP in your router, make sure your gateway and DNS address are correct.

Also, try pinging the torrent site.

Check firewalls, scripts, anything that may be downloaded at school, remove temporary internet files, ........

The torrent sites work on my brother's computer. And also, all my things need the proxy stuff back in again, despite the brief...erm...respite.

I tried what Woody said, and it did fuck all.

I'm going to try pinging stuff tomorrow and see what happens. I'm going to do the temp file deletion now.

EDIT: In 'C:\Documents and Settings\Sam\Local Settings' there's the standard Temp and Temporary Internet files. The internet files folder is refusing deletion and whenever i try to move it or do anything, it says that it's in use by another program. This is obvious bullshit.

There's a folder in it full of other folders called Content.IE5

This is really beginning to piss me off. This is the primary reason why Windows can lick my balls. >(

Unless you *want* to go through the uni proxy you should remove all references like Dennis said. Even if the internet then doesn't work...
hunt through all connection settings.

The router's set up fine if you can access the uni proxy. I think. well unless there's firewalls and stuff.

also I think the 30 seconds thing is IE's normal behaviour. like it waits a bit in hope you might connect.
