I have the following problem:

When I plug my headphones into my laptop, the sound comes out my speakers AND my headphones. Shouldn't my speakers shut up? This way headphones are kind of useless. Any way to set this right somewhere?

Everything I mute gets both muted for my speakers and my headphones.

Maybe there's a hidden switch somewhere on the laptop. Or maybe it's a software integrated switch, for laptops specifically. Or maybe try multichannel and shut up the front speakers. Or maybe I'll jut go to bed now.

The speakers are internal, and I'm plugging my headphone in the s/p dif output, as it states in the manual.

Well there is some vague sound control program on my computer, but whatever I set there does not seem to have any effect, I'll screenshot it when I'm back home.

It is a combo jack that can also be used as heapdhone jack.

Manual says:
Side view laptop
Explanation jacks

So the built-in speakers should turn off when I plug my headphone in. :what: I wonder if this is a hardware or software thing.

RealTek Sound Manager program:
Realtek sound manager speaker configuration
Realtek sound manager S/PDIF

Whatever I change on the options above, nothing changes and the sound still comes out my speakers and headphones.

Are you putting regular headphones with a regular headphone jack in?
I notice the manual only says it will disable it with that.

Yes. I also tried an earphone, but that gave the same result. :(

Is this a new laptop or a new problem?

If it's a new laptop then speak to the place/person where you bought it if this is normal. Failing that, speak to the manufacturer directly.

If it's a new problem, then I would presume that a setting has changed - have you installed any new software/updates recently? Try a rollback to a date you know it worked properly.

Lastly, try someone else's headphones/earphones - it might be that your headphones aren't working correctly.

It's a new laptop. This behaviour isn't normal, as to quote the manual "Using this jack automatically disables the built-in speakers".

I just mailed Asus technical support, hopefully it's a known problem that's easy to solve. ¬_¬

What is the difference between an S/P DIF and a regular jack in?

Why do I ask questions? Because I want to involve you all!

Courtesy of Audioholics we have the following defintion:
Quote:
SPDIF

SPDIF is an acronym for Sony Philips Digital Interface and is a CD “Red Book” standard digital audio transfer file format. A SPDIF interface can transport either stereo left-and-right channel information or multi-channel sound. It is typically found on audio and a/v equipment such as CD transports, Laser Disc players, DVD players, some digital satellite products and computer sound cards where it is implemented using an RCA connector. A SPDIF interface is a 75-ohm connection, identical to composite video in specification. Years ago many audiophiles felt that SPDIF offered better sound than the TOSLINK interface discussed below. Improvements in TOSLINK conductors have closed this performance gap and made concern over the interface a moot point.

S/P DIF is a digital signal thus meaning the data being sent is somehow regulated, it should first be decoded by a piece of hardware and converted to an analog signal before being sent to a speaker. The [wiki]WIKI[/wiki] tells us it can be used for compressed stuff and more.

Edit: Thanks for involving me. :eyeroll:

I thought S/P DIF had a Cinch likr connector, like the white/red (or black/red) ones for your audio, but only one of them. Yargh.
