I hate LCD screens, they never look right and the screen always seems blurry to me.

Quality > Size.

The thing is can you get LCD monitors that work well at different resolutions? I guess if I don't play games, nor watch dvds, and keep the same resolution the space saving of an LCD is best.

I can't get anything higher than 1024x768 out of my couple of year old LCD one. But my 12 year old CRT monitor will support 1280 x 1024.

I have a TFT and it supports a load of different resolutions but it has an optimum resolution of 1024x768. Basically it looks really crisp on that setting and slightly more blurry on the others.

It's all about the space though. If you have the space on your barn door table for two CRT's then you're going with the CRTs.

I find that CRTs are better but I don't mind using LCDs and the saving on space and how stylish the look is making me lean towards getting an LCD to replace my CRT.

My only problems are how it would look at different screen sizes and the viewing angle.

Viewing angle is no problem anymore today, it's all 180 degrees or about that. Or so I have been told by people who do know their banana's.

Perhaps that goes for standalone lcd screens, but not for my laptop screens. =(

My laptop lcd screen has a nice high sxga resolution (1400x1050) and is very very sharp being just 15", but sadly it has such a fucked vertical viewing angle that the top of my screen seems to have a different contrast than the bottom, even if I am right in front of it. That is not nice at all when you're gaming. At other resolutions than the default resolution the graphics look blurred.

My iiyama 19" CRT was great, but huge too. Great colors, very high refreshrates (120 Hz @ 1152x864), could do every resolution.

A friend of mine bought a laptop and the screen is well visible from multiple angles. The ad said it has a viewing angle of 360 degrees.

LCDs are nice for their easiness on the eyes and small size. The viewing angle does tend to suck, though, and color accuracy and resolution switching support is just pitiful.

Overall, The Woodstick Prize tentatively goes to LCD.

The colour accuracy is a very big point. Maybe one would be better off getting a kick ass crt that is really slim?

I get a slight change in contrast at different viewing angles, but nowhere near as bad as my laptop screen. Its much better than that.

Also, with regards to ghosting (which nobody's mentioned yet), that isn't bad either. Well not as bad as my laptop screen anyway. I think the technology is improving all the time.

I prefer LCD. Simply because it takes up less space. Oh, and it doesn't flicker either.

The viewing angle is fine, as long as you're the only one viewing the monitor. The colors are fine too, except for some lighter shades of yellow.

In any case, most of the new LCD screens kick CRT butt.

But the future is SED, with all the advantages of LCD and CRT combined! It works like a CRT, but instead of one electron gun for the entire screen, it has one electron gun per pixel. :o

EDIT: And yes, laptop screens are bad compared to REAL LCD monitors ;)

Laptop LCD's only have small viewangles because they concentrate all the light on the user directly in front of it, thus saving the batteries. For standalone LCD's viewangles are a non-issue.

PS Nobody wants to hear about the Woodstick Prize, more importantly, the Mooglers Award definately goes to that small footprint CRT you was talking about.

A pal of me has a laptop which obviously has an LCD screen ( lol  ) with a resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels (1 year old). I have 1280 x 800 on my laptop (also LCD and it's 1.5 years old). My desktop has CRT.

some pros and cons according to my opinion:

CRT gives me a headaches after more than 1 hour of concentration.
CRT has "real" black while LCD doesn't.
LCD looks bad when you don't look at it in the right angle
LCD brings a "softer" look, more enjoyable for the eye.

What I advise is that you use both LCD and CRT, but depending on what you do you choose between LCD or CRT.

I'm really way too indifferent to even bother buying a moniter. I just got a CRT off my dad. For free.

Yeah but why?

CRT == better colour, + better contrast + better resolution switching
LCD == small, good for text editing

For one, CRT kills my eyes. I seem to be able to look at a LCD for longer.

Also, CRT takes up tons of space. Now I have a LCD monitor, the keyboard is no longer half hanging off the desk.

And I never noticed any difference between contrast/brightness between monitor types - I mean it's not like I studied it or anything, but yknow. I've never really noticed any difference.

Why is a LCD good for text editing? The contrast certainly doesn't help.
