Can anyone recomend a *nix distribution or somewhere where I can get concise reviews of them? I'm looking to put linux on an old PC with a PIII 500 mhz CPU, 256mb (133MHz) RAM, 5/6GB HD and an Nvidia TNT2 graphics card. I want to mainly do development work and browse the interweb with it. So does anyone have any suggestions or information for me? ____________ I see 57,005 people. |

I have something called knoppix.iso but I don't know wtf it is because I was sleeping in class. It's just on my hard disk. I don't know many people who like Linux anyway.

I decided to start with Ubuntu since that is only one CD. After ubuntu I'm going to try Fedora, Mandriva, and SuSe. Do you think I should partition the computer and install several of these operating systems at one time? These distros were recomended by the Linux Distribution Chooser. It is pretty cool, it just asks you a series of questions and then recomends several distros based on your answers. On my journeys through the interweb I also learned to pronounce Linux the way Linus does. ____________ I see 57,005 people. |

Maybe you just need a more lightweight window manager. The mainstream featurepacked ones can be fairly bloated. Plus you should disable half the deamons Ubuntu starts up.
