HI!
I've tried a wireless usb dongel to share my internet with my laptop but it crashes and stuff.
So could I just get a ethernet PCI card for my windows 98 PC and link it with a cable?
Will it just link and *work*??? or are there network settings which I won't know about. O_O
thanks!

To my laptop. It has a "broadcom 440x 10/100 integrated controller" which I assume is ethernet.

I think that you can not share an internet connection by linking in your laptop into your PC's ethernet. You would need a switch and possibly a router.[/ignore]
I've been informed you would be best to get a wireless router.
You can then plug your PC into this and your laptop will work from it also. It is allegedly a "piece of piss" to set up.

The ethernet card is a lot cheaper than a router so maybe i'll get it and see what happens. O_O According to this I need "crossover cable" and it should work.
Thanks.

I don't think a cross over cable will allow you to share your internet. A wireless router is only about 45 sterling and you can use your laptop from anywhere in your gaff or god forbid even move your computer somewhere crazy like the shower.

Ferret has a wireless network set up maybe he could enlighten us somewhat.

The crossover setup should work. But I would put your XP machine as the one connected to the internet. XP's much better at bridging.

Of course the crossover solution works, just bridge the connection on your PC to your laptop.

I don't seem to be having any more luck with this cable than with the wireless thing...except it doesn't crash on me.¬_¬
I tried setting the IP addresses for both PCs as per tverious tutorials. I can get it so XP says it's connected to a LAN. But I can't view the other PC on the network connections.:(

My experience is that windows 98 en windows XP can't always see eachother in the network connections window, though the computers are connected (and for example games over LAN do work).

Yeah windows 98 is dumb. For a start you'll have to restart when you want to connect. Erm... install the Netbios thingy too... I think that helps... probably. Oh yeah and install Microsoft family logon and make it the default - that way you dont get the stupid username/password box every time you start up.

The good news is: if one of the machines is running XP you can make a networking floppy, which you put in the other machines if they are XP OR Win98. Easy.

Then setting internet sharing should be fairly easy from there?

Also there is no apostrophe in "caused".
