Use an algorithm that checks if you are the last poster on a thread. If that is the case the next reply gets added in the last post.

That is not too hard is it?

I'm a fan of usability with Billy and Bilbo. :praise:

Instead of providing 2 different ways to react to a post. If you want double posting to be forbidden, just remove the possibility to do so. :eyeroll:

There are more forums than active forum users on this website, I don't think double posting should be a crime.

Posting more than 2 posts on your first day as a new active user could have been though :-)

As far as I have seen from other forums, the following rules are used:

1) Prevent near-immediate subsequent posting by putting at least 30 seconds between double post. By double post I am assuming posting exactly the same content twice. This happens sometimes with users who think that their post was not submitted and click twice on the submit button.

In my case for example, my mouse sometimes acts funky and double-clicks with a single click (programmatic and/or hardware error). It is a classic usability issue and should be addressed.

2) Prevent users from creating spam-addresses or from ban evasion: use an engine with commonly blocked e-mail address providers such as all the free self-destruct e-mail ones. I tried several times on that other forum to evade ban by using said providers and I wasn't able to get around it. This is a very good way to stop spammers.

Unfortunately I am not a global moderator of these forums so I cannot do much about it other than putting my opinion out there.

One thing that bothers me somewhat is the occasional mass-spamming that's going on. We've all seen this a few days ago. We could block said users from spamming the forums by blocking their.. let's say fourth thread creation by putting a 3 minute block on it. I believe that an efficient anti-spam mechanism would be easy to accomplish by employing several security packs (like in Wordpress), if applicable.

I also think that we should enforce a rule where the forum system checks all its members and if they have not been active for x time it will be sending them e-mails to be active in the next two months. If they are not, then their account shall be expunged. Maybe that's harsh but I can't think of a better way at this juncture.
