DTM has been trying hardest of all of us as an indie game programmer, so I think it's greatly unfair he isn't a billionaire yet.

Well, just create the next Minecraft (which originally was made by one person). I guess it doesn't make you a billionaire, but close enough anyway...

Notch has perfectly captured the meaning of usability. Most games nowadays overload you with information. For example, you are playing a war game FPS and before you get to the action, there's a shitload of cutscenes and dialogues. Then when you do finally get to play, some overhead HUD whining bitch/redneck starts yapping in your ear about how you have to do a set of objectives. Then, the entire area surrounds you with icons. This is when the player thinks: "JUST LET ME FUCKING PLAY - PREFERABLY THE WAY I WANT TO". Well, this is what Minecraft does. No bullshit - you get launched into the world and you play the way YOU want to - without any bullshit destractions or things forcing you to go linearly.

Ya know?

I wholeheartedly agree. That's exactly why I do not even bother to start with most games and something that lead me to try out Minecraft and like it.

Next to that, I do beleive that randomly generated worlds are really powerfull to a game. I remember an example game that came with DarkBASIC, where you had to fly through a randomly generated world.

The game in it self was really really symplistic, but because the level was random, it was fun for a while longer than it would have, if the level remained the same. I remember thinking: I don't understand why this concept isn't used more in games, it's really powerfull.

Minecraft implements randomness really well, and I beleive that randomness can help any game to extend the time they remain interesting to play.

Speaking of randomness - a good example is the Final Fantasy < XIII battles. (Yes, I'm saying less than XIII because we all know how that one went ;P - the linear way). The tension was there. Especially in Final Fantasy I, VII and VIII. I haven't played the others. You would walk around in a world where you were still low level and any minute - but you didn't know when - monsters would attack you. This is exciting. :'P So you had to make sure you'd get to the nearest town to safety. This is one of Sid Meier's principles. His keynote speeches are really powerful as well. You let the player do effort. If you don't.. it gets boring really quickly. Oh look, a zombie, pow, 1 hit kill with my mega-uber-zoid-powerful-ray. It's just like in CoD. It's more exciting to survive the zombie levels with a good ol' M1 or Carbine, but once you have a ray gun and they melt like butter in the sun to your shots.. well then it's not challenging anymore. Also the game depth.. Final Fantasy VII had an incredibly deep story with very strong character development. Look at today's games.. lmao. Some predictable bubbly bitch voiceover acts. Especially Lollipop Chainsaw. LOL.

I'm gonna agree with you there Rincewind!

It's an absolute travesty of justice and all that's right and good in this world!

...

I played Minecraft and couldn't figure out what to do :'(

Then I found some Wiki about it, but I got bored :(
