I've been saving money for some time, and I want to buy a good laptop. It's going to be the successor of my current desktop computer, and next to good specs the battery should last pretty long. I've been looking around on the internet, and for now these are the models that seem best to me for a price of (€ 1300 - 1700):

Asus M6Va (centrino) € 1699,- :
Pentium M 740 (1,73 Ghz, 533 Mhz FSB)
80 GB Harddisk 7200 RPM
2048 Mb DDR2 533 Mhz RAM (2x 1024)
ATI Mobility Radeon X700 128 Mb VGA
15,1 SXGA+ Crystalshine TFT (1400x1050) (No glare)
battery should last for: 4.5 - 5.5 hours

Asus M6Va (centrino) € 1575,- :
Pentium M 750 (1,86 Ghz, 533 Mhz FSB)
60 GB Harddisk 7200 RPM
1024 Mb DDR2 533 Mhz RAM (2 x 512)
ATI Mobility Radeon X700 128 Mb VGA
15,1 SXGA+ Crystalshine TFT (1400x1050) (No glare)
battery should last for: 4.5 - 5.5 hours

Which one of these two would you prefer?

And if anyone could help me look for good laptops in my price range, then that would very appreciated! There's so much on the laptop market that I'm getting a bit confused, especially since I can't easily assemble a laptop like a normal computer, I'll have to buy a specific model. I really hate widescreens and that makes it quite a bit harder.

Have you tried Dell? It's just a bit below your budget, but you're able to costumise your laptop...

Oh and if batery life is the priority, obviously the first is better. I don't think it would make that mutch of a diference though, those two laptops seem quite similar...

Dell just has one laptop with a 15.1 inch screen, being this one, which sadly isn't very good.

I'm not too much of a fan of Dell, Compaq, HP and Packard Bell systems, though Dell still seems to be the best of them. Mostly because they sell bad parts (no brand, who knows where they come from) for an insane price.

Their battery lifes should be about equal. And yeah it's indeed the same model with different parts in it. Such a pity they've put a Pentium M 740 in the first model, instead a Pentium M 750 :P. Still I think I'd take the first one if I had to choose one out of these two. You can upgrade the second model to 2 gb of ram, but then it gets a lot more expensive.

If one knows to find another laptop this nice, nicer or less pricey, then that would be very welcome! I fancy Asus and Fujitsu-Siemens laptops. :P

After a short search it seems that there aren't any official system requirements released yet. Some say though that 1Gb RAM is recomended for a 32 bit pc. (2Gb for a 64 bit pc)

Minimum system requirements will not be known until summer 2006 at the earliest. However, these guidelines provide useful estimates:

• 512 megabytes (MB) or more of RAM

• A dedicated graphics card with DirectX® 9.0 support

• A modern, Intel Pentium- or AMD Athlon-based PC.

So that seems to be a minimum of 512 MB, which is, well, pretty high. Windows XP has a minimum of 64 MB.

2 GB of RAM definitely won't hurt, especially since the computer will be my main computer for another 4 years.

And Peter, you mentioned once in the chatroom that a lot of ram in a laptop can compensate for a slow HD. This HD isn't slow at all but I suppose it'll still be advantagous because the HD has to be accessed fewer times, which might save power.

WHAT

Dell is terrible, Sony is bad, and Compaq is the WORST. They fall apart if you sneeze on them.

I've used all three laptop wise, Compaq Presario was more than perfect (going on 5 years before I dropped it hahahaha), Sony Vaio was bollocks with a capital b (HDD crashed 3 times in one month before I got rid) and my Dell (which I'm typing on now) is alright, only a few minor problems but I can live.

I have an IBM thinkpad. I've had it for about... 4 years now I beleive. And it was second hand when I got it. I've had no problems at all. They're built to last - and you can have any colour as long as its black.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. Lasting isn't a problem for most laptops luckily. But thinkpads definitely look russian, I'll have to give you that.

When I was fixing computers at college, I kept track of the manufacturers on each computer that had bad hardware problems. Without further ado, I give you... the bottom 5:

1. Dell (yes, they're statistically worse than E-Machines)
2. E-Machines
3. Toshiba
4. Sony
5. Compaq/HP

My recommendation is to STAY FAR FAR AWAY from these.

But which of them are most populair? If most people buy a Dell computer, obviously most problems will come from Dell computers.

That's a useful list. :) I never heard of E-Machines though. And I can tell out of my own experience that Toshiba indeed isn't very good - the Toshiba laptop downstairs has 1 dead pixel, 1 lazy pixel and seems to have a broken battery.

And PB, good point. These brands are populair with the common people, that's true.

They might be bad because they were meant for mass production and to be distributed among the people without any computer knowledge.

I took into account the total number of computers I saw for any reason, such as software which isn't the manufacturer's problem.

While it is widely known that laptops are the BOOM, if you are going to study here I can advise you NOT to get one. Taking it to college will only distract you and for home use a desktop will of course be much more fun. Plus it will save you like a million bucks.

Oh and one other thing, next year, if you come to Twente, you can buy at the *special* INF shop here. I don't know their prices on laptops but it might just be something.

If you really got to choose between those two you listed, the first one would surely be worth the difference in pricing.

Oh my, my first :F

The best (and probably second most expensive) laptops on the market. I got mine for about £500 off ebay. Totally worth it. Unless you want to play games, in which case your totally fucked.

Hey Moogle, good to see you at Boolean Soup. :)

I'm not buying a laptop particularly for a study, but just to be mobile. Mobility would help me a lot. I am getting sick of always being in my room when computing, especially taking into account the time I spend on it. With a laptop I can enjoy the sun without wasting my time.

Also, I want to be able to access my own (coding) environment anywhere. At school we have a hobby computer club, and next to having fun there is time to code, but unless I would bother moving files and reinstalling all (illegal) software I need on a school-pc every time again, it'd be much easier just to move it all with me.

Don't worry, I'm not going to hang around being the village fool having my laptop on the desk during lessons, colleges, whatever. It's only for spare time use. I'll be a mobile professional, mark my words.

Yeah I saw the shop last saturday. Their laptops are expensive though (prices can be found on their website).

No no no you don't get it, I want to *use* the laptop.

Does a single wireless router cover your whole house house or are using accesspoints/repeaters? I'm a bit worried if a wireless router can overcome 2 floors.

It should, yes. If you lived in a Cube you might have some problems, but router signals can travel through floors/walls pretty easily.
