Has anyone noticed that most of the popular games have manuals thinner than the index of a large book (1000 pages)?

The booklets are so thin. 5 pages for an entire manual. Can you believe that? That's like an index denoting 4 pages. The game manual of my previous college's final project has more pages. It's a disgrace, really.

One example would be Call of Duty 3: Modern Warfare. 'The most anticipated and best sold game of the year'. Really? Like most people say: "All they did was two weeks worth of programming and a year's worth of marketing.". All the novice kids fell for it. It's nothing but a brushed up COD IV, but I mentioned this already.

If you look at a good old classic gem like The Elder Scrolls: IV - Oblivion, you will see that the developers put an immense amount of effort into that game. There is a huge map that depicts the entire world you are to wander around in (this is proof of an artist team). The manual is well worked out and has a very good explanation of every aspect of the game - well structured.

I keep telling myself and others - you know what? Instead of yearly wasting 60 euros on xbox live, I would much prefer playing serious games where the serious indie gamer crowd is, such as good old games like, I don't know, Age of Empires III, Halo, other RTS games? Heck, I could play SNES games all year. This free experience would give me much better value than playing on xbox live. It is infested with little kids and drugged, drunk, insulting Brits and Frenchies (not to be racist, but they are usually the troublemakers). They ruin one's gameplay experience. It's not like it used to be anymore. It used to be fair, to moderately challenging. In the end there used to be some nut that played a game all year and would be an expert at it - but that's not something you would see often. Nowadays, it's sad. I just picked up Call of Duty 3: MW and these kids fucking (yes, I'm mad) already played the game through second prestige, level 80, have the portable radar perk (that means they can see your ass and where you're headed and you CAN'T DO SHIT ABOUT IT BECAUSE YOU HAVEN'T REAHCED A LEVEL HIGH ENOUGH TO GET THOSE PERKS UNLOCKED). Wonderful. It's just not fair, really. My point is that kids play these games to death and there is no competition anymore. If you're not a freak who plays games day and night, you're fucked. These kids unlock everything and you're stuck with standard shit. Ok, you still have better shooting skills, but they use stupid cheat-like things like perks (C4, bouncing betty, portable radar, radar jammer, ..). Perks are the most idiotic invention ever.

What games do developers nowadays put real effort into?
Do these games even exist, or is it all a marketing trade nowadays? Where are the good old value games days? =D

Sincerely,
