I'm thinking of moving to England. I'm planning on renting a room somewhere, preferably not in a big city, and to get a job.

I was studying Artificial Intelligence in Amsterdam but due to an eye problem I'm unable to continue. I have been working on recovery and my general health for the last half year. It has improved somewhat, but it's still not good enough to continue studying. Hopefully it won't be too hard to get work in the UK with my highest education being VWO (Dutch high school & college education).

There are a lot of UK'ers on Boolean Soup, where do you guys live, and which towns/cities do you recommend? I'm looking for a town/city I can rent a room:

> Where it's relatively easy to get a job
> With the rent < 445.50 Pounds (500 Euros) / month
> With a high Speed Internet Connection
> With a nice climate - my aunt and uncle live in the UK, I've visited them once (don't remember where) during summer and there were a lot of small flies hanging in the air everywhere
> With a super Market nearby
> With a place to run/work on my health/play sports nearby
> With a hospital relatively nearby

I was also wondering whether I need a British passport, and whether I can keep my Dutch passport.

Thanks!

1. There are plenty of jobs around, but most of them are very poorly paid. Shelf stacking in supermarkets or working in McDonalds are all in plentiful supply...

2. Renting and buying homes in northen England is cheaper than the south. I live in Milton Keynes - East Anglia (the middle to the right bit) and a work colleague is looking around for rental accomodation and finding it to be from about £450+ (some do however include utility bills in this price). The average was around £550 per month. Shared ownership might be a cheaper alternative (% buy and rent from local council).

3. The UK has a pretty good (and cheap) range of internet options - ranging from free (need SKY) to around £10 month for unlimited downlaods.

4. Nice climate. This is Britain. We don't know what this means. :P Weather is incredibly variable. When it's nice it's very nice. Unfortunately this is not regular or reliable.

5. Supermarkets, off-licences and charity shops are on pretty much every corner (between fast food takeaway outlets and pubs);) You don't have to go far to find these.

6. Most places in Britain have large parks nearby and pretty much every town will have a leisure centre or available sporting activities/environments.

7. Small clinics/GP surgeries are very common (at least one in every town). Larger hospitals can usually be found within 10 miles of everywhere.

You can't get a British passport unless you become a British citizen. You will need a work permit/visa though. You'll need to look into this.

Frim and I are in Manchester. I think it's one of the best places in the country I've been to.

1) If you're looking for tech jobs it's almost mandatory to either be in the North West (Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield) or in London. It's where all the tech work gravitates around these days.

2) We used to play about 370 quid or something for a one-bedroom flat. We now pay about that for a two bedroom house but we are renting privately and the area isn't superb.

3) Internet is easy to get nationwide. There are some providers to watch out for. The best ones are only in certain regions. We're currently with BeThere and it's a million times better than who we were with (Tiscali).

4) As Ian said there's no way you're going to get good, predictable weather. Today it was drab and raining in the morning, really sunny at lunch and tonight it's like a fucking hurricane outside. As far as I know though, Manchester has it particularly bad due to it's location in regards to the Pennines or something. I don't pretend to be a meteorologist, I just complain about it.

5,6,7) As Ian said, you'll be very hard pressed to find a place in this country for these to be problems.

I don't know anything about passports, but all the information is online. This might be a good place to start: http://www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk/eucitizens/

Good luck buddy!

Thanks for the answers. Are there any tech jobs available for people without university education?

You'd be better off checking somewhere like - http://www.monster.co.uk/?WT.s … =Seeker_Generic

I don't work in the tech industry, so couldn't say if qualifications matter, but I suspect that there will be plenty of jobs available that don't need them - depends exactly what you're after though. You don't need to be qualified to stack motherboards in PC World - that's a tech job ;)

As Fiona said, Good Luck :)

You don't need a british passport. Free trade amongst EU members mean we can go live and work anywhere no need for anything fancy just have to register for a social security number which will be done by your employer but you might be better off doing this before getting a job as you would have to pay emergency tax until you are assigned a number. How do you guys not know this?

You should also consider some where with a decent airport and cheap carriers for getting home this will save you lots of money.

I'd stick with a suburb of London. These can be quite small but you've got the big smoke on the doorstep also a there is ridiculous amount of airports for cheap holidays or the eurostar.

If you don't mind the cold Edinburgh in Scotland is meant to be a great place to live I don't know about jobs though.

If you want any help with the old CV or advice I'm here!

Also is there really loads of jobs in the UK? I would've thought with the unemployment rate rising it wouldn't be great.

I'd suggest living in Ireland but with nearly 14% unemployment you'd have a hard time getting a job. ;-)

Come work for my employers though and I get a bonus!

Well I've never had to do it so I don't know. But you're Irish so if you work here you're practically an immigrant, therefore you do know. Filthy Irish.

The unemployment rate is due to the dramatic decrease in menial or labour based jobs.
People with a skill that can be applied to something will find it much easier to get work but they almost always need to be in a city.

If you have a car, does it matter you need to live in a city?

I don't have a car and manage fine with public transport. It's a bit awkward when you have to transport some large object that you've bought but that's what taxis are for. Running a car is damn expensive.

I've not either but it's one of the basic tenets of the EU. How do you think so many polish people are working on a building site near you?!!!!

Because they're actually really good workers and not lazy like most English people.

Still, it's not fair that English people cannot find a job because almost the entire Eastern Bloc has plans on moving to Western Europe.

It's far less fair if they can't find work in their own country. Leaving ones country to go work in another is a pretty big sacrifice and one that none of them take lightly.

I'd rather we allowed them to work here if they want. It improves relations with their country and eventually bolsters both economies. Large numbers of Polish people are actually returning to Poland because it's now booming since they opened the borders. If you think these two events and England's stance on EU immigration are a coincidence then I really don't know what to say.

Contrary to popular belief, Polish people don't come to work in other countries like the UK because they want to destroy us, it's because they have little choice.

Plus, like I say, they're often better workers that your average Englishman.

English people can still find jobs anyway, there's far more economical problems than Polish people.

the worst economical problem is GOLDEN PARACHUTES. But why do Polish not work in their own c(o)unt-ry?

Lol this sounds as if they are malfunctioning clock radios.
