Right, as part of a team I just came second in a website building competition. Which you might think is great, until you see the site that beat us: http://library.thinkquest.org/07aug/01149/ It looks like the worst geowebs site you've ever seen! All the content is generated flash, even the buttons are free flash resources! I bet the whole thing was built in a very old version of frontpage. They couldn't even be arsed to put in a title in the head! pretty much ALL the graphics, text and other content seems to either be free resources or generated from some shitty flash-generating site. They have TWO stupid "welcome to our site" pages, one with a video that wouldn't even load at all for me. It's only been designed for one screen resolution with no thought for anyone who doesn't want to be stuck in just less than 1024x768. It makes me physically nauseous just to look at with no colour coordination and flashing things all over the place. The stupid fucking flash everythings overlap one another. ARG! How the fuck did they decide that this should win anything other than a smack in the face for crimes against web design? ____________ |

Unless you were obliged by your school to enter this competition, what exactly did you expect it to be? ThinkQuest is a competition to build an educational website which will be hosted by ThinkQuest, ensuring nobody will ever care about it, while the prizes in the competition are equipment for your school. (...) That's like a lose-lose-lose situation right there. Choose your battles carefully. ;-) On the ThinkQuest website I found the evaluation criteria, and the quality of the built website isn't exactly on top. It seems this is much more like an online essay competition than a technical web design competition. Just wondering, but do you have a link to your entry Yonni? ____________ Personal website: http://www.loijson.com |

Well, the UK comp. did have the prize of a laptop for each team member (until they decided to go cheapskate at the last minute and change the prizes days before they announced winners) and based on past entries and other experience then I would expect dire site design building like the winning one shouldn't even be considered. I don't particularly care about the site itself, or our subject matter (none of our team did, but we can lie pretty convincingly), so the effort was put in for the prize(s) and 'cause I get satisfaction from building a good, working website. My site is here: http://library.thinkquest.org/07aug/01849/ (NB, I did not write the content, just made the site/graphics/photos) ____________ |

Ah I see, I read "The top 5 teams in each age division receive laptop computers and a cash award for the coach's school" as "The top 5 teams in each age division receive (laptop computers and a cash award) for the coach's school". Winning a laptop is a good motivation. To what did they change the prizes though? By the way congrats for winning the second prize. ____________ Personal website: http://www.loijson.com |

They changed prizes to "An Apple ipod" (likely to be a 4GB nano) for first prize, which I neither need nor want, and a "Digital camera" which considering the ipod is a nano isn't exactly going to be quality and I have a good Canon already. I feel like fighting for this, but I haven't had a chance to talk to the others yet properly. I'll certainly give the winners a fucking hard time at the awards ceremony ____________ |

With a bit of luck the camera will be more expensive than the first prize. Quote: I'll certainly give the winners a fucking hard time at the awards ceremony Shouldn't you be giving the judges a hard time instead of the winners? It's not as if the winners can help it. ____________ Personal website: http://www.loijson.com |

They fucking bribed it, yonni, just like mr tits said. Your site is A LOT better! A black background with flashy letters?? I thought CICS was bad. What were they thinking? Anyway the prizes don't sound all that spectacular anymore... Hard work does not bring its own reward, knowing people and having money does... :s ____________ Kwakkel |
