For those of you who have ever tried a functional programming language (like Haskell, ML) I have the question.. was it easy to learn? why...or why not?

Not for game programming, at any rate...

Quoting Gobliz: Did noone ever try it? Not me. Isn't functional programming mathematics, and not very useful for game programming? Also on a lighter note: how's your Cap'n Jimbo Catfish game going? [Edited on January 3, 2007 by Rincewind] ____________ Personal website: http://www.loijson.com |

No, I didn't mean for game development. Just in general. Because I have to hold a debate about, if functional programming is hard or easy for the average programmer. So I wanted to know your opinions. Cause I think nothing is ever too hard, you just have to put more time in it.

So I wanted to know your opinions. Cause I think nothing is ever too hard, you just have to put more time in it. Does putting more time into not make it hard? Case in point; I can watch television without putting any or very little time into it but to use the internet I must first learn how a computer works which takes time ergo therefore etcetera using the internet is harder then using a television or do you have some other measure of how hard something is to do? Don't all languages use functional programming to a degree? Do you mean learning to use functions versus only using state? What would you classify as being easy? Fast? Not problematic? Could use previous knowledge? [Edited on January 3, 2007 by PEader] ____________ I see 57,005 people. |
